DIY Perfect Wool Trousers

With the temperatures now dropping into the 40’s, I can officially say fall is in full gear.  What says fall even more is a pair of high waisted cropped wool trousers.

These trousers were made with this beautiful wool tweed fabric from Mood.  The fabric has a slight stretch to it which made it incredibly easy to cut and sew.  I’ve worked with wool in the past that tends to unravel but this was a true delight.  The selection and quality of wool Mood offers is hands down the best.

The pattern I used to make these trousers were Burda B7250 also seen here and here.  I decide this time to make them a slim fit with the following alterations:

Added a high waist
Lined them with a stretch silk found here
Opted for a cropped length
Added 6″ metal zippers to the pocket
Added flat pleats
Pinned down the middle pleat to create a faux piping

I am completely in love with the feel of this wool and the design of these trousers and have a future filled with more wool goodness.

Those are awesome!! Did you have any trouble with the fit using the Burda pattern? I've been looking for a good fitted pants pattern. Also may I ask how you adjusted the waist? Did you just simply slash and spread at the waist?

    • December 11, 2013 / 11:28 pm

      Thank you 🙂

I have yet to find a pattern that fits me so with this Burda and others I generally cut a size too large and just fit as I go (I do this because with many patterns I may fit the waist but not the butt or I may fit the legs but not the waist so for me patterns out the pkg don't work well). I don't pay much attention to seam allowance as either. With the waist, I generally make all the fit alterations prior to attaching the waist band so when I attach the band, I measure the waist band from the pants and not the pattern piece. If the pattern piece is a 33" and I have altered the top of the pants to a 29", I fold the pattern piece in half and cut 4" from what would be the center back of the waist. Then I tape those pieces back together and cut the pattern. But because you can't do this until you have a perfect fit from the waist down, I wait until the very end to cut my waist band pattern piece.

      I hope that make sense.
