DIY Cocoon Coat

When it comes to jackets and coats I get extremely excited.  I absolutely love a great structured coat  in every shade imaginable.  While browsing Moodfabrics.com which by the way has the best wool selection, I came across this wool Marc Jacobs fabric that instantly looked like winter.  Unfortunately it was so popular they sold out online but here is an alternative.

I also decided to venture into down loadable patterns with this Burdastyle cocoon coat pattern #103.  Ok here is my opinion on these patterns…….they are gorgeous and much more fashion forward than any Vogue, Butterick or McCalls BUT it is definitely a process.

CONS: -The pattern is $5.40 which is a bit more than store bought patterns when they are on sale.
Printing this pattern off at Kinko’s would have cost me an additional 15.00  on a wide format
which put the cost at over $20.00 for a pattern. (not happening)
-I printed the pattern at home on 51 pieces of paper, spread all 51 pieces on the floor to create
the pattern, tape and then cut the pieces. (easy but time consuming, this whole process took
              about 2 1/2 hours)
-Very vague instructions all on one sheet so if you are new to patterns you would be a bit lost
no step by step like traditional patterns.
-No seam allowance with the pattern and the sizing is a bit off
-Several extra pattern pieces that clearly didn’t belong with this pattern was included with
              the download (had me confused)

PROS: -The patterns are very fashionable and unique.
-You don’t have to deal with shipping costs or the time it takes to ship the pattern.
-I find these patterns easier to manipulate

If you have a little time on your hands, I would say give it a go, the possibilities are endless with the options available.
