DIY Radiant Orchid Jacket

DIY Radiant Orchid Jacket
Along with the trend of boxy jackets and coats, this is the year of radiant orchid, the pantone color for 2014.  When this was released, I thought hmmm I don’t know about this pink/purpleish color until I came across this mulberry colored double cloth twill from Because I was familiar with this fabric, I knew it would make a great coat, with it’s nice weight and stiffer feel.   I’m now sold on radiant orchid.

This jacket was made with Vogue V8862 view C   with the following pattern alterations:

-Used only the top half of the pattern and added 4″
-Added a 2.5″ navy blue textured fabric around the hem
-Removed the middle seam from the back of the pattern
-Added a 2.5″ band around the sleeve
-Left off the pockets and buttons

Sweater-Helmut Lang
Jeans-William Rast

That Radiant Orchid colour is pretty amazing and looks great on you! I also love how you made a short boxy jacket out of the Vogue pattern. Love the big collar!

The color is gorgeous. I was waiting for Spring or Summer to sew something up with it, but I love that you are rocking it now.

I just found your blog and fell in love. You've inspired to think more outside the box with my creations. You are great at selecting fabric for your pieces. Do you have any tips on what you look for, etc., when selecting the fabric you use?

Thank you so much Shenal! When I select fabric I'm initially drawn to the color and then dig deeper into the fabric content. Since I started sewing I believe I've sewn with most fabrics so I have a good idea of how the fabric responds. When making structured dresses I look for wool with a touch of lycra and lined with a silk charmeuse, this is a great combo for well fitting dresses with great structure. I would recommend going to your local fabric store, shopping off the discount rack and experimenting with different fabrics you wouldn't normally use and just see how you like it. You will surprise yourself.
