DIY oversized shorts & wide sleeve top

I am most definitely a dress & pants person, but lately I’ve been living in shorts.  I always looked at shorts as very casual, so in an effort to up my shorts game I pulled out the perfect med/light wool crepe that’s unfortunately sold out but here are a few great options.

The shorts were made using the Vogue 8836 pants pattern with the following alterations:

-Removed 32″ from the length of the pattern

-Removed the box pleats and added one inverted pleat on each side (allows the front of the pants to lay flat)

-Added a 2.5″ waist band

-Added a 2″ band at the end

The top was made using this summer wool which is light weight and simply perfect for warmer weather and lined with this silk.

The pattern used for this top was this super simple Vogue V8840 view A pattern with the following alterations:

-Removed 1.5″ from the length of the pattern

-Removed the breast darts

-Added 2.5″ to the bottom of the pattern to create a more squared pattern

-Added a 17.5″x 21″ sleeve to the bottom of the upper sleeve and connected the two sleeves by adding a 1″ elastic

-Added a 9″ zipper at the back of the neck

-Removed the front seam

Chandler’s top and shorts were made from a self drafted pattern using this eyelet fabric that’s perfect for kids wear.

Hi Nikki, I want to make these. Did you use your regular size since they are “oversized “?

I cut them two sizes bigger but I always recommend cutting a bit bigger. It’s a lot easier to fix a too big issue other than cutting them too small.

Hey Nikki! LOVE the shorts!!! I have shorts on my summer “To Do” list and I wanted to know if, in addition to removing length from a pants pattern, were there any other things one should keep in mind when modifying a pants pattern to make shorts? Hope all is well and great work, as usual!

      Hi Michelle

No, it’s pretty cut and dry although I generally cut the pattern 1 to 1 1/2 sizes larger.
