DIY High Waisted Midi Pencil Skirt

When it comes to pencil skirts, I will never have too many.  Not only are pencil skirts the easiest piece of clothing to wear, but also one of the easiest pieces to make and fit.  This skirt was made with a ponte knit I picked up at Joann’s using the same method used to make this with the following changes.Cut a waistband 1.5″ wide.

The top was made with old faithful Vogue V8840 with the following alterations:

Added 8″ to the bottom sleeve
Added sleeve cuffs made by cutting two pieces of fabric 3 1/2″x9″ sew the two pieces of fabric together leaving the 3 1/2″ sides open.  Fold the cuff in half and sew the open end to the end of the sleeve.
Removed the breast darts  and added darts to the shoulder
Removed  3″ from the hem of the pattern
Added a 1.5″ non rolling elastic to the hem

I love this color! Tailored knit pieces are some of my favorite things. Relaxed and comfortable, yet they look so polished. Fabulous!

Love this outfit. I'm a beginner at sewing. Recently I purchased a brother XR9 and I'm so excited to get started on my sewing journey. However the stitching on the top looks very tricky. I work on Wall Street and yes I on a budget . I'm going to start making everything .

Hello Nikki! I have browsed through your blog, and I am in awe! I cannot believe you have only been sewing since 2012!! I am a mom of 2 girls (7 and 1) and I love to sew, however I keep making excuses for not putting my all into my dream of being a fashion designer. I would love to sew 5/6 days a week, because I love all things fashion! I Love what you do, you are so very very talented, and such an inspiration. I cant even tell you how I found you blog, but I am glad that I did!! Absolutely everything that you have constructed is impeccably tailored clothing suitable to be sold in high-end department stores. I am going to stop holding myself back and begin sewing for myself and my daughters, as well as teach them how to sew. I think this is such an amazing talent to have. I would love to connect sometime, and pick your brain since you have become my new favorite person, you are living my exact dream!! Thanks for doing what you do! By just being yourself, and without evening knowing it, you have inspired so many women, evidence of all the sweet comments from everyone who sees your work! I know I can be a bit chatty! So all i can say now is THANK YOU! YOU GO GIRL!! and congrats on your pregnancy!

Any type of 4-way stretch will work. Ponte knit works better, it provides stretch as well as structure.
