DIY Ikea fabric mini dress

Everyone who follows my blog knows I’m Mood Fabrics biggest fan, but………..I happen to love checking out the fabric selection at of all places Ikea.  I find they have fun interesting fabric that’s probably more suited for home decor or children but when I spotted the latest selection I had to grab a few yards.

Ikea has a great selection of about 40 different prints all under $9.00 a yard so you really can go wrong especially if you’re looking to experiment.  Keep in mind, the quality is nothing compared to a normal fashion fabric ie: stiffer cotton  and zero stretch but with a little work you can make it happen.

The fabric I purchased was in-store but if you don’t have an ikea near you, the on-line selection is pretty nice as well.

This dress was made with a self drafted pattern but any shift dress pattern with a few alterations will work.

Chandler’s dress was made using McCalls 3107.  For her clothes it’s imperative they are comfortable for her or she will immediately start screaming off off off 🙁  so when I’m using Ikea fabric for her, I generally wash it first which will soften it up but because I’m pretty certain this fabric will bleed like crazy if I throw it in the machine, I placed the Ikea fabric on top of the neoprene so It’s not touching her skin.  I also add velvet to the neck of all her close fitting dresses and tops for added comfort.

I thought this fabric looked familiar. I licked on this print on my last visit to IKEA, they only had one bolt on hand and I grabbed 5 yards. Great usage of the print!
