Since I began my sewing journey I resisted making anything with denim, mainly because I’m a huge denim snob. When it comes to my denim, I enjoy a soft, premium thicker fabric with a bit of stretch for comfort purposes. After countless attempts at tracking down a denim that would be perfect for this top-stitched dress, I landed on this dark blue/black Ralph Lauren stretch denim at moodfabrics.com. Its two-way stretch provides just enough stretch for comfort and the stability you want in a denim. It sews, cuts and irons beautifully and it’s extremely easy to manipulate.
The pattern I used for this dress was the bodice to McCalls M5927 view B with the following alterations:
-Added a seam to the bodice front
-Faced the bodice of the dress
-Added a 1″ band separating the bodice to the skirt
-Added a pencil skirt using this self-drafted pattern (added a seam to the front and back of the skirt)
-Added a 22″ back zipper
-Added an 8″ band at the bottom of the dress
-Added a 7.5″ slit
-Topstitched all seams and around the arms
The waist bag was made using my free clutch tutorial with the following alterations:
-Added 3 suede belt loops to the back
-Added a 1.5″x60″ belt with a D-ring
-Topstitch the edges of the bag and the belt
